Holliday was running hard on the treadmill when I came home. I changed clothes, warmed up, and began to struggle through a workout. After Holliday finished and went into the bathroom to shower, I gave up and sat down at the computer.

My story was half-done. It started in the lockup where I talked to Daminion, then segued into his past, the rise of the Baller, his relationship with Black, and the competition for Slow Creep. It was some of the best work I’d ever done, but it needed more reporting. I needed to verify if Tommy Daminion really was on the Soulstacks and Pump Records payrolls. I needed to speak to Stan Ross. And I needed to find Slow Creep.

I showered and went into the bedroom. Holliday was lying back on the tightly made sheets, twilight burnishing her naked cinnamon body. We were deep inside each other when my Sidekick went off with the “Spank Me” ringtone. I looked at it with one eye—a 718 number—and let it go to voice mail. Two minutes later it spank-spanked again, this time with a text message from Taylor.
